17 Retail Inventory and Stockout Statistics Every Owner Should Know in 2026
We read the 2026 Availability Effect study from Retail Economics and DHL Supply Chain, the 2026 American Customer Satisfaction Index retail study, the latest Census e-commerce release, and a 2025 Journal of Retailing study of online grocery fulfillment failures. Together, these sources show what happens when a customer cannot get the product they expected.
There is no single all-retail stockout percentage that can be applied to every store. An on-shelf audit, an online order, a pickup order, and a customer survey measure different parts of availability. The useful approach is to report the original denominator, separate grocery from general retail, and connect every availability measure to the customer response it can actually support.

One in five UK grocery trips includes at least one out-of-stock item
The 2026 Availability Effect study from Retail Economics and DHL Supply Chain found that around one in five UK grocery trips involves an out-of-stock item. The study estimates that this represents roughly 930 million shopping visits each year where shoppers cannot find something they want.
This is a UK grocery finding, not a U.S. all-retail benchmark. It is also a trip-level measure: it tells us how often a shopping mission encounters at least one missing item, not what percentage of every SKU or shelf position is out of stock.
UK grocery shelf availability averaged 89.7%, rising to 97.1% when substitutes counted
The same study's national audit found average on-shelf availability of 89.7%. When a comparable substitute was counted as an acceptable way to complete the purchase, effective availability rose to 97.1%.
The 7.4 percentage point difference is the commercial value of a workable substitute in the audit's definition. It does not mean that every substitute preserves the original brand, size, price, margin, or customer preference. Retailers should therefore track exact-item availability and original-item-or-substitute availability as separate KPIs.
Auditors found missing items in 82% of UK grocery stores checked
Retail Economics conducted in-store audits across more than 100 UK store locations. Each audit checked 40 high-frequency grocery items across fresh, ambient, and household categories. Across the audits, 82% of stores had at least one item missing from a typical weekly shop, and 64% recorded two or more missing items.
This is a useful example of why the denominator belongs in a stockout statistic. The study did not claim that 82% of all grocery inventory was unavailable. It counted stores with at least one missing item in a defined 40-item audit basket.
UK grocery stock gaps put 2.1 billion pounds of sales at risk each year
The Availability Effect study estimates that stock gaps put approximately 2.1 billion pounds of UK grocery sales at risk each year. The estimate includes sales lost outright or displaced when shoppers switch stores, delay purchases, or trade down.
At-risk sales are not the same as confirmed lost sales. The figure combines audit results, shopper behavior, and economic modeling. It is best used as evidence that availability has a measurable commercial cost, not as a guaranteed recovery opportunity for any individual retailer.
44% of UK shoppers switched or added a supermarket because of availability problems
In the study's survey of 2,000 UK households, 44% of consumers said they had switched or added another supermarket in the previous year because of stock availability issues. Nearly six in ten, or 59%, said availability was a key reason they shop across multiple stores.
The customer consequence is therefore broader than one missed item. A stockout can change where the next shop happens, especially when the missing product is a staple or when the customer already has a low tolerance for disruption.
Convenience stores had availability in the low-to-mid 80% range, versus 90% or more for larger stores
The DHL and Retail Economics audit found that convenience-store availability typically sat in the low-to-mid 80% range, compared with 90% or higher in supermarkets and hypermarkets. Convenience stores represented about one-fifth of grocery sales but almost half of the displaced spend associated with stockouts in the study.
The survey also found that 63% of shoppers believed availability was worse in convenience stores than in larger supermarkets. The format difference matters because smaller stores usually have less backroom capacity, narrower assortments, and less room to absorb a replenishment delay.
The study found that meal-for-tonight and special-occasion shopping missions were especially sensitive to stock gaps. Around three in five shoppers said that a missing item would disrupt one of these missions and often lead to a secondary trip.
This is a stronger operating signal than a simple average stockout rate. A missing item does not have the same value in every trip. A missing ingredient for tonight's dinner, a birthday product, or an essential household item can create more switching and abandonment than a low-priority item that the customer can postpone.
Six in ten low-tolerance shoppers accounted for roughly three-quarters of sales at risk
The Availability Effect grouped the six in ten shoppers with the lowest tolerance for stock gaps into its Defectors and Flexers segments. The study says these shoppers drove around three-quarters of all sales at risk from stock gaps.
This concentration means a retailer should not analyze only the average customer. A store can have a reasonable overall availability rate while still losing a disproportionate amount of demand from customers who switch quickly, shop across multiple stores, or expect a specific product to be present.
Specialty retailers scored 82 out of 100 for merchandise availability in the 2026 ACSI study
The 2026 ACSI Retail and Consumer Shipping Study gave specialty retailers an availability-of-merchandise score of 82 out of 100, up from 80 in 2025. The same specialty-retailer group scored 87 for ease of pickup, 86 for pickup order accuracy, and 84 for speed of order readiness.
ACSI is a customer-experience score, not a shelf audit. It measures how customers perceive the retailer's availability and fulfillment experience. The study is based on 31,293 completed surveys collected from January through December 2025, so its 82 score should not be read as an 18% stockout rate.
Online retail satisfaction was 79, while delivery quality scored 83 and returns scored 80
The ACSI study reported an overall online-retailer satisfaction score of 79 in 2026. Among its digital experience measures, product delivery quality scored 83 and ease of making returns scored 80. Mobile app quality scored 88, reliability scored 87, and checkout and payment ease scored 86.
These are not inventory availability rates. They show where an online stockout or fulfillment problem is experienced by the customer: product selection, delivery, payment, and returns are connected parts of the same promise. A retailer that measures only the warehouse event can miss the customer cost of an inaccurate availability message or a failed order.
A failed online grocery order delayed the next order by 7.22% in one 2025 study
An open-access 2025 Journal of Retailing study analyzed data from the online operation of one leading omnichannel grocery retailer. It found that when an order was not fulfilled as expected, the time to the customer's next order increased by 7.22% on average.
The study found larger delays for non-perishable products. Spending reductions were especially visible when promoted items failed to ship, and substitutions often worsened the delay even though they could recover some immediate sales. Because the evidence comes from one retailer's operation, it is a useful causal operating insight, not a universal industry benchmark.
An on-shelf availability rate is not the same as an online fill rate
Retailers use several metrics that sound similar but have different denominators:

An item can be available in the back room but absent from the shelf, available in the store but unavailable for pickup, or shown online but not actually fulfillable. Those are different failures and should not be combined into one headline rate.
There is no defensible all-retail stockout benchmark in these sources
The strongest current source in this article is specific to UK grocery and has a defined audit basket. ACSI covers U.S. retail customer experience and reports perception scores. The Journal of Retailing study covers one omnichannel grocery operation. None of these sources supports a claim such as "the average retailer has an 8% stockout rate."
That missing universal benchmark is important information. Fashion, grocery, electronics, beauty, home improvement, and convenience stores have different assortments, replenishment cycles, product lifetimes, and customer missions. A good article should preserve those differences rather than turn one category's rate into a fake industry average.
U.S. e-commerce represented 16.9% of adjusted retail sales in Q1 2026
The Census Bureau estimated $326.7 billion in seasonally adjusted U.S. e-commerce sales in Q1 2026, equal to 16.9% of adjusted total retail sales of $1,929.0 billion. E-commerce grew 9.8% year over year, compared with 3.9% for total adjusted retail sales.
This is channel context, not a stockout rate. It explains why online availability, order accuracy, substitutions, and delivery failures belong in an inventory article: a material share of retail demand now depends on a digital promise that the item can be found and fulfilled.
Use a category and channel table before quoting an availability statistic
The source evidence can be compared without pretending that the metrics are identical:

Calculate stockout cost from your own demand instead of guessing
Use the source statistics as context, then calculate the operating impact from your own transaction and inventory records:
- Exact-item on-shelf availability = successful exact-item checks divided by total expected item checks, multiplied by 100.
- Effective availability = checks where the original item or an acceptable substitute was available divided by total expected item checks, multiplied by 100.
- Stockout rate = failed availability checks divided by total availability checks, multiplied by 100. State whether the check was a shelf audit, an online request, or a customer demand event.
- Fill rate = units fulfilled divided by units ordered, multiplied by 100. If you use order lines instead of units, call it line fill rate.
- Substitution rate = substituted out-of-stock lines divided by out-of-stock lines, multiplied by 100. Also report customer acceptance separately.
- Abandonment rate = affected trips or orders that produced no purchase divided by affected trips or orders, multiplied by 100.
- Lost units = expected demand during the stockout minus actual units sold. Estimate expected demand from comparable in-stock periods rather than treating zero sales as zero demand.
- Lost sales = lost units multiplied by expected net selling price. Lost gross profit = lost sales multiplied by the expected gross margin percentage.
- Recovery rate = sales recovered through an accepted substitute, later purchase, or another channel divided by modeled at-risk sales, multiplied by 100.
For a simple illustration, imagine 1,000 expected item checks. If 897 exact items were available, exact-item availability was 89.7%. If 971 checks had either the original item or an acceptable substitute available, effective availability was 97.1%. The remaining 29 checks were unresolved after substitutes were included. This is a measurement example based on the published rates, not a new industry estimate.
Track each stockout by SKU, store, channel, and customer response
The minimum local stockout dashboard should retain the SKU, store, channel, timestamp, expected demand, system on-hand quantity, physical count, shelf status, online status, order status, substitute offered, substitute accepted, cancellation, later recovery, selling price, and gross margin.
Break the results out by product category, day of week, promotion, store format, fulfillment method, and shopping mission. The DHL evidence shows why: a store-level average can hide format differences, a weekly average can hide day-of-week gaps, and an overall rate can hide the high cost of a missing essential or special-occasion item.
