10 Hotel Booking Channel Statistics Every Owner Should Know in 2026
Hotel booking channel is not one event. A traveler can discover a hotel on an online travel agency (OTA), compare the hotel's own website, book direct, cancel later, and return through a different channel. The useful statistics therefore describe the stage of the journey and the population behind each number.
We reviewed SiteMinder's Changing Traveller Report 2026, SiteMinder's direct-booking analysis, the J.D. Power 2026 North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index Study, and the public CoStar with STR data page. SiteMinder says its traveler report surveyed 12,000 travelers across 14 countries, including the United States. J.D. Power's North American study covers 44,787 branded hotel guests, 104 brands, and nine hotel segments. The sources do not provide one comparable global or U.S. table of all hotel reservations by channel, so this article does not invent one.
The figures below are a source-led reference for hotel owners, operators, and hospitality writers. Discovery share is not reservation share, a direct booking after OTA research is not an OTA booking, and a vendor's typical commission or cancellation comparison is not a universal contract benchmark. SiteMinder reports that 26% of travelers surveyed will begin hotel research on an OTA in 2026, up from 18% the prior year. In the same report, search engines fall to 21% as a starting point, down from 36%. This is a meaningful shift in where a hotel first needs to be visible.
The number describes the first research location, not the channel that receives the reservation. A traveler who starts on Booking.com can still visit the hotel's website, compare the direct rate, call the property, or book through a loyalty account. The practical KPI is therefore not simply OTA share. It is the path from first discovery to booked room, including the channel that ultimately captures the reservation.
Search engines fell from 36% to 21%, so discovery and conversion should be reported separately
The 15-point decline in search engines as a starting point is one of the largest movements in the SiteMinder report. It does not mean that search traffic has disappeared. It means that the share of travelers naming a search engine as their first research step has fallen while OTAs, word of mouth, familiar brands, and AI gain ground.
Hotel reporting should keep at least three fields separate: first research source, last comparison source, and booking source. Without those fields, an OTA can appear to have won a booking that it merely introduced, while the direct website can appear to have acquired a booking without showing that another channel created the initial demand.
Eighteen percent of OTA starters ultimately book direct, up 3.3 percentage points
SiteMinder reports that 18% of travelers who begin their search on an OTA ultimately book directly with the hotel. The rate is up 3.3 percentage points year over year. This is the strongest evidence in the named sources that OTA discovery and direct booking are not mutually exclusive paths.
The denominator is travelers who start on an OTA, not all travelers and not all hotel reservations. The figure should therefore be written as an OTA-to-direct journey statistic. It is not evidence that 18% of OTA reservations convert to direct, and it should not be used to calculate a hotel's direct booking share without property-level booking data.

SiteMinder's direct-booking guide, citing its 2026 traveler research, reports that 40% of U.S. travelers book directly and that the global average is 28%. The comparison is useful because it shows why a single global direct-booking target can mislead an owner in a specific market.
The page does not present this as a property-management-system or central-reservation-system market-share table with a common hotel inventory denominator. It is a SiteMinder traveler-research figure. Use it as a directional consumer benchmark, keep the U.S. and global populations separate, and compare it with the hotel's own direct share by property type, market, season, and booking window.
Word of mouth doubled to 14%, while familiar hotel brands rose to 7%
SiteMinder reports that word-of-mouth recommendations from friends and family doubled from 7% to 14% as a starting point for hotel research. The same release reports that familiar hotel brands increased from 3% to 7%. These are discovery channels that can move a traveler into a direct relationship before an OTA ever becomes the final booking surface.
The commercial implication is that a hotel should track referral and brand-led demand alongside paid search and OTA visibility. A guest who arrives through a recommendation may still compare prices elsewhere, but the original trust signal is different from a generic listing impression. The report does not publish a universal revenue value for a word-of-mouth or familiar-brand start, so that value must be measured locally through source tagging and post-booking surveys.
AI starts only 4% of hotel research, but 80% of travelers want AI-powered capabilities
SiteMinder reports that AI reached 4% as a starting point for hotel discovery in 2026, up from 1% the year before. The same report says 80% of travelers want AI-powered capabilities in the booking journey, with price monitoring and alerts leading the wishlist at 44%. These are two different measures: current discovery behavior and desired product capability.
The distinction matters for investment decisions. A hotel should not claim that AI already drives 80% of bookings because 80% is a stated preference for capabilities. It is better used as a signal to make rates, policies, room details, amenities, and location information easy for travelers and AI systems to understand, while measuring actual AI-referred visits and bookings separately.
Among J.D. Power's AI research users, Gen Y represents 49% and Gen Z 23%
The J.D. Power 2026 North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index Study reports that, among hotel guests using AI tools for hotel research, Gen Y accounts for 49% of AI users and Gen Z accounts for 23%. J.D. Power defines Gen Y as people born from 1977 to 1994 and Gen Z as people born from 1995 to 2008.
The denominator is the critical part of this finding. The 49% and 23% figures describe the age composition of guests who use AI for research; they do not show that 49% of all hotel guests are Gen Y AI users or that 72% of all guests use AI. The study covers 44,787 branded hotel guests in North America, but the public release does not provide the total number of AI research users or a booking conversion rate for them.
SiteMinder puts typical OTA commissions at 15%-25%, but the range is not a universal net-cost benchmark
SiteMinder's direct-booking guide says OTA commissions typically run from 15% to 25% per booking. This is commercially important because two bookings with the same room rate can produce different net revenue after distribution costs. It is also a vendor guide range, not a universal contract term or an original market-wide commission survey.
Owners should compare channels using net contribution rather than commission alone. The calculation should include room revenue, commission, payment processing, marketing or metasearch costs, cancellation and no-show cost, customer-service time, loyalty value, and whether the hotel receives usable guest contact and preference data. A direct booking can have a lower distribution cost but still lose value if the booking path has poor conversion or the guest acquisition cost is hidden elsewhere.
SiteMinder reports direct-booking cancellations at 10.6% versus 21.8% for OTA bookings
SiteMinder's guide reports a cancellation rate of 10.6% for direct bookings compared with 21.8% for OTA bookings. The comparison points to an important channel-economics question: gross bookings are not the same as rooms that arrive and generate revenue.
The public page does not provide the full denominator, market mix, booking window, rate-plan mix, cancellation policy, or property sample behind those two figures. They should therefore be published as SiteMinder's source-reported comparison, not as a universal hotel benchmark. A property can use the idea more rigorously by calculating cancellation, no-show, re-sale, and service-recovery rates by channel under the same time period and rate-policy definitions.
A useful hotel channel dashboard connects discovery, booking, cancellation, and repeat stay
The named sources support a seven-stage channel model: discovery, research, comparison, booking, payment, cancellation or arrival, and repeat booking. The table should record the first research source, last comparison source, booking channel, market, property segment, booking window, rate plan, cancellation policy, and net revenue. It should also show whether the guest returned through the same channel or moved from OTA discovery to direct repeat booking.
No single direct-versus-OTA percentage can answer all of those questions. The SiteMinder report is a 12,000-person traveler survey across 14 countries. Its 26% OTA discovery figure is not a reservation share, and its 18% OTA-to-direct figure has OTA starters as the denominator. J.D. Power's AI percentages use North American branded hotel guests who use AI for research. The public CoStar with STR data page describes a directly sourced benchmark sample of 94,000 hotels and 12 million rooms, but the page reviewed does not publish a direct-versus-OTA booking mix.
For a property-level article or dashboard, the cleanest output is a channel path table with one row per booking and separate attribution fields. That preserves the interesting finding from the research: a hotel can rely on an OTA for discovery while still winning the booking and the repeat relationship directly.
