10 Hotel Amenity Statistics Every Owner Should Track in 2026
Hotel amenity decisions are often discussed as a list of features: smart TVs, fitness centers, filtered water, housekeeping, pillows, and so on. The useful research is more precise. It separates what a hotel offers, what guests use, what guests say they need, and what is associated with satisfaction.
We reviewed the public J.D. Power 2026 North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index Study and a peer-reviewed study of hotel sleep and overall satisfaction. The J.D. Power release covers 44,787 branded hotel guests, 104 brands, and nine hotel segments, based on stays in the previous 30 days between May 2025 and May 2026. The sleep study covers 609 frequent business and leisure travelers in the United States who had stayed in a hotel in the previous 30 days.
The numbers below are a source-led reference for hotel owners, operators, and hospitality writers. They are not a universal ranking of every amenity. Availability is not demand, a stated need is not usage, and an association is not proof that an amenity caused a satisfaction change. The original sources and their dates are listed at the end.

The comparison table keeps the research measures separate. "Not reported" means the named source does not publish that measure publicly. In the sleep study, reported exposure means the guest said the attribute was at least slightly bothersome. OR means odds ratio. The sleep paper reverse-coded its satisfaction outcomes so higher values represented greater complaint; the table describes those outcomes as poor sleep or lower satisfaction for readability.

Smart TVs are available in 74% of hotel rooms, but only 62% of guests use them
The J.D. Power 2026 study reports smart-TV availability in 74% of hotel rooms and guest usage at 62%. Both measures increased by 2 percentage points year over year. The important insight is not simply that streaming televisions are common. It is that a hotel can now measure the difference between installing a feature and having guests use it.
The two percentages should remain separate in any hotel amenity article or dashboard. Availability describes the room or property offer. Usage describes guest behavior in the study. The public release does not provide a room-level revenue return, a guest satisfaction lift caused by smart TVs, or a breakdown of usage by hotel segment, so those claims should not be invented from the 74% and 62% figures.
Daily housekeeping is the most widely named "need to have" amenity in the public comparison
Among the three amenities named in the J.D. Power release, 46% of guests identify daily housekeeping as "need to have." That is higher than filtered water stations at 30% and fitness centers at 21%. This gives operators a clear preference signal: the service that repeatedly affects the room itself is more often named as essential than either of the two physical amenities in this comparison.
The 46% figure is not a housekeeping utilization rate, a staffing recommendation, or a claim that daily housekeeping raises satisfaction by a particular number of points. The source does not publish those measures in the release. The practical use is to put daily housekeeping on the same scorecard as staffing capacity, room-turn time, guest segment, and the share of guests who actually request or use the service.
Filtered water stations matter to 30% of guests, while fitness centers matter to 21%
J.D. Power reports that 30% of guests identify filtered water stations as "need to have" amenities, compared with 21% for fitness centers. The nine-point gap is useful because it prevents a common planning error: assuming that a larger, more visible amenity automatically has broader stated importance.
Neither percentage tells an owner how many guests use the amenity, how often they use it, or whether the investment improves satisfaction. A water station requires a different operating model from a fitness center, so the article's useful comparison is not a universal winner. It is a prompt to compare stated need with local usage, installation cost, cleaning, maintenance, and the guest segments that drive bookings at the property.
Overall hotel satisfaction rose to 665 out of 1,000, but the release does not prove amenity causation
Overall hotel guest satisfaction in the J.D. Power study increased 13 points year over year to 665 on a 1,000-point scale. The largest named dimension gains were value for prices paid at +18 points, food and beverage at +14, and hotel facilities at +14. J.D. Power also says satisfaction improved across all seven dimensions it measures: check-in and checkout, hotel connectivity, hotel facilities, food and beverage, guest room, staff service, and value for prices paid.
Those results show that the guest experience improved across the study, but they do not establish that a particular amenity caused the improvement. The public release does not provide a causal estimate for smart TVs, housekeeping, filtered water, or fitness centers. A careful article should report the dimension gains as context and label them as aggregate satisfaction measures, not as return-on-investment claims for a single amenity.
A study of 609 frequent travelers found a strong association between sleep satisfaction and overall hotel satisfaction
The peer-reviewed study by Robbins and colleagues surveyed 609 frequent business and leisure travelers in the United States. Participants were adults who had stayed in a hotel during the previous 30 days. The sample was recruited with geographic quota sampling and was approximately split between business and leisure travelers. About 50% rated their hotel sleep as very good or excellent, while about 32% chose neither good nor bad.
After adjusting for age, sex, and relationship status, the study reported an odds ratio of 3.48, with a 95% confidence interval from 2.86 to 4.23, for the relationship between sleep satisfaction and overall hotel satisfaction. This is a cross-sectional association, not proof that one amenity caused a guest's rating. It does, however, make sleep a particularly useful operating lens: bedding and room noise can be measured as concrete room conditions rather than discussed as vague comfort factors.
Uncomfortable pillows were reported by 58.8% of travelers and had a 2.92 odds ratio for poor sleep
In the sleep study, 58.8% of respondents said uncomfortable pillows were at least slightly bothersome during their most recent hotel stay. In the adjusted single-attribute model, uncomfortable pillows were associated with poor sleep at an odds ratio of 2.92, with a 95% confidence interval from 2.13 to 4.00. When the researchers entered the sleep-related attributes together, uncomfortable pillows remained a unique predictor with an odds ratio of 2.49.
The paper also reports an odds ratio of 3.29 for the relationship between uncomfortable pillows and lower overall hotel satisfaction in a model adjusted for sleep satisfaction. These are not percentages of dissatisfied guests and do not mean that replacing pillows will produce a 3.29 times increase in satisfaction. They identify pillows as a measurable room-quality problem worth tracking through inspection, replacement cycles, guest complaints, and post-stay feedback.
Uncomfortable bed linens affected 46.3% of travelers and had the largest listed association with lower satisfaction
Uncomfortable bed linens were reported as at least slightly bothersome by 46.3% of the 609 travelers. The single-attribute model associated uncomfortable bed linens with poor sleep at an odds ratio of 2.47, while the combined model identified them as a unique predictor at an odds ratio of 2.63, with a 95% confidence interval from 1.46 to 4.75.
Among the room attributes shown in the paper's overall satisfaction table, uncomfortable bed linens had the largest reported association with lower hotel satisfaction: an odds ratio of 5.06, with a 95% confidence interval from 3.45 to 7.43. The finding is observational and should be reported as an association. For operators, the actionable measures are linen quality, laundering outcomes, replacement age, inspection failures, and whether complaints cluster by room type or supplier.
Noise is widespread, but the combined model singled out HVAC and outside noise
The sleep study found that 54.2% of travelers reported sound from the air-conditioning unit or heater as at least slightly bothersome, and 51.6% reported noise from outside the hotel. In the combined model, HVAC or heater sound remained a unique predictor of poor sleep at an odds ratio of 1.57, while outside noise remained a unique predictor at 2.23. The corresponding single-attribute odds ratios were 2.03 and 2.37.
Noise from the hallway and from another room was even more commonly reported, at 54.8% for each. Those noise sources were individually related to poor sleep, but they did not remain unique predictors in the study's combined model. That distinction is valuable: a property should not only count noise complaints. It should identify the source, then compare recurring HVAC and outside noise with hallway and adjacent-room complaints before choosing maintenance, room assignment, acoustic, or building-envelope interventions.
Amenity choices sit inside a hotel cost structure where operating burden matters
The American Hotel and Lodging Association's 2026 State of the Industry report projects hotel wages and benefits near $131 billion in 2026. It also describes gross operating profit per available room as roughly 90% of 2019 levels because operating expenses remain elevated. These figures are hotel-industry context, not a cost assigned to any individual amenity.
That context changes how an owner should read the preference statistics. A 46% stated need for daily housekeeping does not answer whether a property can deliver it profitably at its current staffing level. A 21% stated need for a fitness center does not include the cost of floor space, equipment, safety checks, cleaning, and maintenance. A useful amenity article therefore pairs every guest signal with the burden the property must carry to deliver it consistently.
The most useful hotel amenity scorecard separates six different questions
The public research supports a scorecard with six separate fields: availability, use or reported exposure, stated need, satisfaction association, guest segment, and operating burden. J.D. Power's study is designed to benchmark hotel brands across segments and to measure seven broader guest-experience dimensions. The sleep study shows why room-level conditions need their own measures rather than being hidden inside a general guest-room score.
For each amenity or room condition, an owner can record whether it is present, whether guests use it or report being affected by it, whether guests call it essential, and whether the property's own satisfaction data moves with it. The property should then add the segment, room type, cost, staffing, maintenance, and service-recovery data. This keeps a frequently used but low-value feature distinct from a rarely used feature that prevents a severe sleep problem.
The research also supplies a boundary for publishing. Use J.D. Power's 74%, 62%, 46%, 30%, 21%, and 665-point figures exactly as reported. Use the sleep paper's 609-person sample, exposure percentages, odds ratios, and confidence intervals exactly as reported. Do not turn any of them into a claim about universal hotel demand, guaranteed revenue, or causal return on investment.
