How loud should background music be in a spa?

There is no single correct decibel number for every spa. Set background music to the lowest level that creates continuity and gently masks equipment noise while still allowing a client and therapist to speak in a normal, calm voice. If people raise their voices, repeat themselves, or pause a conversation because of the music, it is too loud for that zone.

NIOSH treats 85 dBA averaged over eight hours as an occupational exposure limit, not an ambience target. A spa should operate far below a level that makes speech difficult.

The real problem is uneven sound

A spa is not one acoustic room. Reception may contain doors, queues, phones, and retail activity. Treatment rooms may have ventilation, water pumps, towels, and therapist conversations. A corridor can carry sound from another zone. The same amplifier setting can therefore feel quiet in one place and intrusive in another.

The main operational mistake is setting the volume in front of the speaker and assuming the whole spa matches it. A second mistake is turning up every zone to cover a short noise, such as a dryer, trolley, pump, or conversation. That raises the sound for every client and employee, including people who were not affected by the original noise.

What the evidence can and cannot show

NIOSH says that noise risk depends on loudness, duration, repetition, and individual susceptibility. It recommends an 85 dBA eight hour average exposure limit for workers and explains that a person often needs to raise their voice to be heard at arm’s length around 85 dBA. NIOSH also recommends using sound level meters to understand the level reaching a worker’s ear.

This is a safety boundary, not an ambience target. It does not prove that a level will feel relaxing or acceptable to every client. Hearing sensitivity, tinnitus, migraine, age, and treatment purpose can change the preference.

Research also has limits. A café study examined background music volume and acoustic comfort during conversation. A café is not a treatment room and the study gives no universal spa setting. It supports assessing music with speech and room acoustics, not by the control alone.

A useful volume policy

Create different starting limits for each zone.

In treatment rooms, choose a level that stays behind therapist instructions and client requests. Test it from the treatment table, not only from the doorway. The client should not need to speak over the track, and the therapist should be able to explain the treatment without leaning towards the client.

At reception, allow enough level for continuity across the entrance, but protect speech at the desk. Staff should not need to repeat prices, appointment times, or health questions. If reception is noisy, improve the layout, door seals, or sound absorption before compensating with louder music.

In relaxation rooms, start lower than reception and ask whether the music is noticeable without becoming the focus. Corridors and changing rooms may need a separate setting or no music at all if sound spill is disruptive.

Write the policy down. Give staff a maximum setting, a pause rule for treatment conversations, and permission to lower or stop music when a client asks. A quiet spa should not force a client to justify a sensitivity or preference.

How to measure the room

Use an A weighted sound level meter for a screening check. A phone app can help compare locations and detect a sudden change, but it is not automatically a calibrated legal measurement.

Measure at the height and position where the sound matters:

Measure music while the room is empty and while normal equipment is running. Record the approximate dBA reading, the time, the source, and what people were doing. Do not chase a number while ignoring the voice test. A steady level can still be unpleasant if the room is reverberant or the music has sharp peaks.

Troubleshooting common volume problems

If the music is hard to hear in one corner, move or add a suitable speaker for even coverage before raising the entire zone. Check speaker direction, reflections, and whether a door or curtain blocks the sound.

If the music seems loud only when the spa is busy, measure the combined room noise. More people may be raising their voices because the music is already too loud, creating a loop. Lower the music first and see whether conversation settles.

If clients complain about sudden loudness, check track intros, bass peaks, advertisements, notifications, and automatic volume changes. Use a catalogue with consistent mastering and reject tracks that begin dramatically.

If staff report ringing ears, muffled hearing, headaches, or a need to shout, lower the music immediately and investigate the total workplace exposure. NIOSH treats repeated exposure at or above 85 dBA as hazardous. Seek competent occupational health advice if measurements approach that range.

If a treatment needs silence, pause the music. Atmosphere is not more important than clear consent, comfort, or communication.
