Can salons play Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube?

Usually not under an ordinary personal account. Spotify says its service is for personal, non-commercial use and cannot be played publicly from a business. Apple and YouTube terms also limit use of their services and content, and a subscription does not automatically give a salon the public performance or commercial playback rights it needs.

There are two separate questions:

Does the platform allow this account and service to be used in a salon?
Does the business have the rights needed to play the composition and recording publicly in its country?

A salon needs to answer both. A platform subscription alone is not proof of permission.

The operational problem

Consumer apps are designed for individual listening. A salon has different requirements:

Music plays for customers and staff, not one private listener.
The same account may be used at several locations.
Staff may skip songs, change playlists, or start a personal account.
Advertising, explicit lyrics, unavailable tracks, and sudden volume changes can create service problems.
Playback must continue through opening hours and recover after a network or device failure.
Local copyright organizations may require separate permission for compositions and recordings.
A provider's commercial plan may cover some rights but not every local obligation or event.

The cheapest looking setup can create the most operational uncertainty.

What the official terms establish

Spotify's support guidance explicitly distinguishes personal use from public or commercial use. Its end user agreement also restricts use to the conditions of the service. YouTube's terms govern access to its service and content, while YouTube's own help explains that commercial use of content requires appropriate rights. Apple terms similarly describe the permitted use of its services and content rather than granting a blanket business music licence.

These terms do not answer every country's copyright question. They establish why a salon should not assume that a personal subscription becomes a business licence simply because playback is technically possible.

Copyright is also layered. A song has a musical composition and lyrics, while a recording has related rights in the recorded performance. WIPO explains the role of copyright and related rights, but the practical permission process is handled through national collecting societies, rights organizations, or a business music provider. Check the country where the salon operates, not only the country where the account was created.

A safer setup

For a salon, use this process:

Read the platform's current public and commercial use terms.
Ask the platform or business music provider in writing what locations, players, and uses are covered.
Identify the national organizations that license public performance and recorded music.
Keep invoices, licence confirmations, terms, and provider correspondence in one folder.
Decide who may operate the player and whether staff may pause or change music.
Test playback, scheduled starts, network recovery, and a fallback before opening.
Review the arrangement when the salon adds a location, event, treatment room, or new type of playback.

Do not rely on a staff member's personal login. Personal credentials create account, privacy, continuity, and permission problems when that person leaves.

What about YouTube?

YouTube is particularly risky for a salon environment because videos can contain advertising, comments, changing availability, loud intros, or content that was uploaded without the necessary rights. An embedded video, a free stream, or an ad-free subscription does not by itself grant the salon the right to use the underlying music publicly.

If a business wants to use a specific YouTube video, it needs to verify the rights and the platform's permitted use. In practice, a service designed and licensed for business playback is easier to govern.

What about Apple Music and Spotify?

Changing from one consumer subscription to another does not solve the underlying issue. A salon should ask:

Is public or commercial playback permitted by the service?
Are multiple locations or concurrent players allowed?
Are the recordings and compositions covered for the intended country?
Can the business control explicit content and interruptions?
Is there a written fallback and support process?

If the answer is unclear, pause the rollout and obtain written clarification.
