Should retail stores change their music during the day or season?

Short answer: change the energy when the task changes, not just because the clock does

Retail stores can change music by time of day or season, but they should not create a completely different identity for every daypart. The most useful approach is a stable core sound with controlled changes in energy, tempo, vocal density, and seasonal colour.

Research does not prove that a morning playlist, an evening playlist, or holiday music will automatically increase sales. The reason to change programming is operational: customer tasks, traffic, service needs, promotions, and staff exposure change.

What research supports

A field study of 550 consumers in two retail contexts found that the effect of background music varied with the store type and consumer characteristics. That makes daypart testing reasonable, but it also warns against assuming that one schedule works for every store.

A 2006 meta-analysis found small to moderate effects of retail background music on value related outcomes, behaviour duration, and affective response. A 2023 study found that fast-tempo music affected variety-seeking under specific conditions, with arousal and music familiarity moderating the result. Neither study establishes a universal morning, evening, or seasonal formula.

Research on Christmas-associated music and scent also examined how environmental cues interact in a retail setting. It supports the idea that seasonal cues should fit the wider environment. It does not prove that starting holiday music earlier increases revenue, or that every customer welcomes it.

Build dayparts around operational needs

Opening and early service

Early service may need low-distraction music while staff prepare displays, receive deliveries, and handle the first customers. Keep the volume and vocal density low enough for quick coordination. If the store serves commuters or early shoppers, test whether a little more energy helps without making the opening feel rushed.

Midday browsing

Midday programming can support the dominant shopping task, but use traffic data rather than assumptions about who shops at noon. A browsing store may use moderate energy and varied tracks. A consultation-heavy store may need music that stays behind speech.

Peak traffic and queues

Busy periods are not automatically a reason to play faster or louder music. If the problem is a queue, address staffing, layout, signage, and checkout capacity first. Music may help an atmosphere feel lively, but it cannot increase service capacity and can make speech harder.

Late service and closing

Reduce stimulation when customers need help, staff are tired, or closing tasks begin. A gradual transition is usually less disruptive than a sudden change. Staff should know whether the evening schedule is a customer-facing choice or merely a technical fallback.

Seasonal programming

Use seasonal cues when they fit the brand, customer expectations, stock, and local context. Mix seasonal tracks with the core catalogue so the store remains recognisable. Avoid short loops that staff hear all day. Be especially careful with lyrics, cultural references, and holiday timing in multilingual or international stores.

The solution is a schedule with exceptions, not a rigid clock. Store managers should be able to pause a daypart change when there is an event, a queue, a delivery, a local holiday, or an unusual customer mix.

A practical programming method

  1. Map traffic, customer tasks, staffing, service periods, and noise by hour for two representative weeks.
  2. Define a core sound that remains recognisable across the day.
  3. Create small variations for quiet, normal, and peak periods. Change one main attribute at a time.
  4. Set transition times with a buffer rather than switching at an exact minute during a service interaction.
  5. Use a seasonal layer with an expiry date, rotation rule, and staff feedback checkpoint.
  6. Compare complaints, speech comfort, staff fatigue, queue friction, product interaction, and technical incidents before and after the change.
  7. Review the schedule after promotions, opening-hour changes, layout changes, or unusual seasonal demand.

Troubleshooting

If the store feels inconsistent, reduce the distance between daypart playlists rather than removing all variation. If staff complain about seasonal repetition, lengthen the catalogue, reduce the seasonal proportion, and rotate by day. If the music feels too quiet at opening and too loud at peak, fix speaker coverage and total noise before using schedule changes to compensate.

If sales or dwell time changes after a schedule update, repeat the comparison and record promotions, traffic, weather, staffing, stock, and prices. A seasonal coincidence is not proof that the music caused the result.
