Why a single number fails

The music is only part of the exposure. Refrigeration, lifts, alarms, tills, delivery equipment, conversation, and nearby construction can raise the total sound level. Turning up the music to cover a ventilation hum may make speech and staff exposure worse without solving the source.

  1. Start with speech, not the music control. At the checkout and service desk, staff should be able to speak with customers without routinely raising their voices.
  2. Walk the whole store. Check entrance, main aisles, product zones, fitting rooms, checkout, staff areas, and any outdoor or semi-enclosed area.
  3. Measure under typical operating conditions, including refrigeration, ventilation, queues, and normal conversation. A quiet pre-opening test can understate the real problem.
  4. Use even coverage. Multiple moderate speakers are usually easier to control than one loud source, but speaker placement and room treatment still matter.
  5. Record the level and the context. Note the device, position, time, music state, other equipment, and whether the reading is steady or fluctuating.
  6. Set a manager range with a clear lower and upper boundary. Staff should know who can change it and what to do when speech becomes difficult.
