Does background music affect how customers experience a store?

Music contributes to the overall store atmosphere, but its effect varies and should not be presented as a guaranteed way to increase sales or visits.

Short answer: yes, but not predictably

Background music can change how customers feel about a store and how they move through it, but it is not a reliable sales switch. The effect depends on the music, the shopping task, the store category, the brand, the acoustics, the customer, and what else is happening in the space.

The most defensible conclusion is that music is one environmental cue. It can support a coherent atmosphere when it fits the store and remains comfortable to hear. It cannot guarantee higher sales, longer visits, better conversion, or more return visits.

What the research supports

A 2006 meta-analysis by Garlin and Owen combined 148 effects from 32 studies of background music in retail settings. It found small to moderate effects associated with value related outcomes, behavioural duration, and affective response. That supports testing music as part of the customer experience, but it does not produce one universal best playlist.

A larger meta-analysis by Roschk, Loureiro, and Breitsohl examined 66 studies and 135 effects involving music, scent, and colour. Environments with music tended to receive higher pleasure, satisfaction, and behavioural intention ratings than environments without it. The analysis also found that effects tended to be stronger in service settings than in retail settings. This is a useful limit: evidence for a pleasant response is not the same as proof of additional revenue.

A field study of 550 consumers in two retail contexts concluded that music effects varied with the type of store and with consumer characteristics. Older experiments also found that tempo can affect traffic pace and sales volume in particular supermarket conditions. These studies show why a result from a supermarket, florist, or clothing store should not be copied into every shop.

How music can change the experience

Mood and arousal

Pleasant music may contribute to a more positive evaluation of the environment. Tempo, loudness, musical complexity, and familiarity can change arousal. A lively track may make a quiet store feel more active. A softer, less demanding selection may suit browsing, consultation, or premium presentation. These are tendencies, not guaranteed emotional responses.

Pace and time perception

Music can influence the perceived pace of a visit. In some settings, slower music has been associated with slower movement or longer time in the environment, while faster music can increase energy or traffic flow. A longer visit is not automatically better: a customer who cannot find a product or hear an employee may leave dissatisfied.

Congruence and brand meaning

The strongest practical question is often whether the music fits the goods and setting. Research on music and product congruence, including a field experiment in a florist, suggests that music matching the product context can affect evaluations and spending in that setting. The result does not prove that romantic music will increase sales in every florist. It shows why a recognisable fit can matter more than choosing a fashionable genre in isolation.

Attention and conversation

Music competes with speech, announcements, payment sounds, and product information. If the track is too loud, lyrically dense, or attention grabbing, it may weaken customer conversations even when the atmosphere feels energetic. In service intensive stores, staff must be able to explain products without raising their voices.

The actual retail problem

Retailers usually do not need music that makes every customer behave the same way. They need a sound environment that helps the intended shopping task:

The operational problem is matching these needs while staff hear the same system for hours. A playlist that sounds impressive for ten minutes can become tiring after repetition, and a track that works at opening may be wrong when traffic, queue length, or staff workload changes.

A practical way to test music

  1. Define the intended experience in observable terms. For example, “calm browsing with clear conversations” is more useful than “premium and modern.”
  2. Choose a narrow test condition. Change one main variable at a time, such as tempo range, vocal density, familiarity, or volume.
  3. Check fit with the whole store. Listen from the entrance, product area, checkout, fitting rooms, and staff position.
  4. Run the test during comparable periods on comparable days. Do not compare a quiet Tuesday morning with a busy Saturday afternoon.
  5. Collect customer comments, staff feedback, complaint count, conversation difficulty, and technical incidents.
  6. Compare operational outcomes such as queue friction, time spent in key zones, and completed consultations. Treat sales as an outcome that can be influenced by many factors, not as proof that music caused a change.
  7. Keep the better condition only if the benefit is repeatable and the drawbacks are acceptable.

Troubleshooting

If customers complain that the store feels tiring, check loudness, repetition, treble, and vocal density before changing genre. If staff dislike the music, ask whether the problem is taste, repetition, speech masking, or exposure time. If the brand feels inconsistent, compare music with the visual merchandising, lighting, service language, and customer expectations.

If dwell time rises but conversion falls, do not assume the music is successful. Customers may be staying longer because the store is harder to navigate. If sales rise during a music test, repeat the test and check traffic, promotions, staffing, stock, and seasonality before claiming a causal effect.
