Why do I need PRS for Music and PPL?
Because a commercial recording usually contains two different rights layers. PRS for Music represents the musical work, such as the composition and lyrics. PPL represents the sound recording and the related rights of performers and recording rightsholders.

When a business plays a commercial recording for customers or staff, both rights can be relevant. TheMusicLicence brings the common UK business route together into one contact and invoice for many uses, but it does not make the rights identical or cover every possible use.
When you may need to check more
Ask for additional permission or check separate terms when you:
- copy or download recordings
- add music to a video, advert or other production
- use music in a website, app, livestream or social channel
- use a consumer streaming account for business playback
- add live music, a DJ, radio, television or another music source

If you only use MelloJam
According to MelloJam's current plan terms, a business that plays only MelloJam music through the MelloJam player does not need a separate PRS for Music or PPL licence for that MelloJam playback itself. The plan covers MelloJam's original catalogue and the commercial playback rights MelloJam controls under those terms.
The answer changes if other music is added. A non-waivable government, statutory or collecting-society charge can still apply if applicable local law imposes it directly on the venue. Radio, television, Spotify, other recordings, live music, DJs, events, copying and online use are outside that MelloJam-only statement.
