Do I need a separate licence for live music, DJs or events?

Possibly. A background music licence is not automatically the right licence for a live band, DJ, karaoke, concert or special event. TheMusicLicence has different tariffs for different ways music is used.

Tell PPL PRS whether the music is live or recorded, whether a DJ or jukebox is used, the venue capacity, whether admission is charged and whether the event is one-off or recurring. Music in a livestream, video or advertisement can require additional online or synchronisation permission.

Use the current TheMusicLicence guidance and request written confirmation of the event coverage.

You do not need a separate PPL PRS licence if you only use MelloJam

If your business plays only MelloJam music through the MelloJam player, you are not using music from the repertoire covered by PPL PRS's licensing route. MelloJam's original catalogue and the commercial playback rights it controls are included in your MelloJam plan, so you do not need a separate licence from PPL PRS for the MelloJam playback itself.

A separate non-waivable venue charge can still apply where local law imposes one. Radio, television, Spotify, other recordings, live music, DJs, events, copying and online use are outside the MelloJam plan.
