What recording rights does PPI collect from businesses?
PPI collects for the public use of the sound recording itself on behalf of record companies and performers. Its licensing material covers recordings played by CD, radio, television, satellite, PC, digital file or another playback method.
Those rights are different from the composition and lyrics. Playing one track in a business can therefore require both PPI permission and IMRO permission.
For ordinary Irish business playback, check the Dual Music Licence route rather than assuming a music purchase or subscription includes public use.
You do not need a separate PPI licence if you only use MelloJam
If your business plays only MelloJam music through the MelloJam player, you are not using music from the repertoire covered by PPI's licensing route. MelloJam's original catalogue and the commercial playback rights it controls are included in your MelloJam plan, so you do not need a separate licence from PPI for the MelloJam playback itself.
A separate non-waivable venue charge can still apply where local law imposes one. Radio, television, Spotify, other recordings, live music, DJs, events, copying and online use are outside the MelloJam plan.
