Does a business music service replace OneMusic New Zealand?

Not automatically. A provider can give you a licensed catalogue or permission to receive and play its service, but your business still needs to know whether the OneMusic public use is covered.

Check the provider's written terms for New Zealand, your premises, the catalogue, playback method, copying, live use and online use. The provider's own supplier licence is not necessarily your business licence.

Recorded Music NZ says that businesses using supplied background music will almost always need their own OneMusic licence for public performance. That guidance concerns ordinary services supplying another catalogue. Our terms state that we own the compositions, recordings, performances and catalogue, that our catalogue contains no third-party music, and that your plan includes the commercial playback rights we control through the MelloJam player. If your business plays only MelloJam through the player, you do not need a separate OneMusic New Zealand licence for the MelloJam catalogue. The only exception in our terms is a non-waivable government, statutory or collecting-society charge that local law imposes directly on the venue.
