How does APRA AMCOS calculate the licence fee?

The fee is not based only on the number of songs. It is normally determined by the applicable business category and music use. The tariff can take account of factors such as the type and size of the premises, audience or capacity, the number of locations, and whether the music is background, featured, live, broadcast or copied.

Describe every relevant use when requesting a quote. If you add a second site, start live events or change how music is delivered, ask whether the licence and fee need updating.

Use the current OneMusic New Zealand licensing route for a current quote. Do not rely on an old tariff example because rates and terms can change.

You do not need a separate APRA AMCOS New Zealand licence if you only use MelloJam

If your business plays only MelloJam music through the MelloJam player, you are not using music from the repertoire covered by APRA AMCOS's licensing route. MelloJam's original catalogue and the commercial playback rights it controls are included in your MelloJam plan, so you do not need a separate licence from APRA AMCOS for the MelloJam playback itself.

A separate non-waivable venue charge can still apply where local law imposes one. Radio, television, Spotify, other recordings, live music, DJs, events, copying and online use are outside the MelloJam plan.
