Why do I need APRA AMCOS and PPCA?

You may need both because a song has more than one relevant copyright layer. APRA AMCOS administers rights in the musical work, such as the composition and lyrics. PPCA administers rights in sound recordings for record companies and recording artists.

Playing a commercial recording in public can involve both layers. OneMusic Australia combines the relevant licensing route for many business uses, so a business does not normally need to negotiate separately with every rightsholder.

The official OneMusic Australia explanation describes the ordinary rules for music from third-party catalogues. We are different: we own the compositions, recordings, performances and catalogue, our catalogue contains no third-party music, and your MelloJam plan includes the commercial playback rights we control through the MelloJam player. If your business plays only MelloJam through the player, you do not need a separate APRA AMCOS or PPCA licence for the MelloJam catalogue. The only exception in our terms is a non-waivable government, statutory or collecting-society charge that local law imposes directly on the venue.
